For real estate developer Salt, the Heldentoren in Knokke-Heist is more than an architectural statement. This landmark tower reflects Salt’s philosophy of living, where form, long-term thinking, and technology come together to create a complete experience. For this development, Niko was the obvious partner for design and intelligent living comfort.
A landmark for tomorrow
“Fréderic and I are both passionate about aesthetics and about achieving the ideal design for every building,” says Bjorn Christiaens, who leads Salt together with his cousin Fréderic Christiaens. “This is always based on the place itself. The Heldentoren stands on historic ground, where the Kursaal once was the engine of Heist. By building a new beacon here, we strengthen the identity of this location and help shape the Heist of tomorrow.”
The tower, nearly 70 metres high, was designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects. They are renowned for their sculptural approach to architecture, as seen in the MAS in Antwerp. The flowing volumes, refined textures, and generous openings turn the building into both a landmark and a place of calm. “Architecture should tell a story,” says Bjorn. “It had to feel as though the Heldentoren had always belonged on this square.”
Design, build, live
Salt summarises its development philosophy in three words: design, build, and live. Bjorn explains: “With design, we mean aesthetics that bring a sense of calm — pure lines and materials that feel natural and effortless. That vision becomes tangible in the show apartment just around the corner. Natural light, the tactile quality of the materials, and the open circulation around the patio create an interior that doesn't imitate, but breathes.
