Niko was founded by the brothers Alfons and Werner De Backer in 1919. They designed and manufactured switches and socket outlets that quickly won the Belgian market. Today, Niko is managed by the third generation of the De Backer family. The point of departure for all the solutions offered by this family-owned business is the daily needs of its customers. It designs innovative concepts to make life at home and at work flexible and easier. For years, Niko has been committed to intelligent design and an environmentally-friendly approach and has continued to invest heavily in research and development.
Niko will celebrate its 100th anniversary on 1 April 2019. That's 100 years of innovation and looking to the future. From the first porcelain switches in 1919 to the introduction of Bakelite ten years later. From the first generation of home automation in 1997 to the smart open system that Niko Home Control has now become. With the revolutionary touchswitch, we now celebrate this milestone in our history.
To mark the occasion of Niko's 100th anniversary, an exhibition will be held in Niko's head office. This exhibition provides a summary of Niko's history in the spirit of the past 100 years and invites visitors to participate in thinking interactively about the future of living and working. The exhibition will open to the public on 6 May.
The book '100 years of Niko - Illuminating Ideas' describes Niko's history over 3 generations of the De Backer family and everyone involved in Niko's success. You can buy the book at the reception of Niko, after visiting the exhibition, or alternatively order it online. All profits will be donated to an initiative in the city of Sint-Niklaas for under-privileged youths.
A royal guest at Niko! King Filip visited our production facilities and spoke with our employees about topics such as innovative work organisation, artificial intelligence and the internet of things in home automation. He was also given an exclusive preview of the exhibition we are organising to mark our company’s 100th anniversary.

Niko has always paid considerable attention to design and architecture. Therefore, in the 4th quarter of 2019, we will be inviting two accomplished architects Smiljan Radic and Go Hasegawa to Niko to talk about their vision and achievements. From West to East, Chile to Japan, two top architects, two entirely different cultures: ancient Chilean roots alongside ancient Japanese traditions. Both cultures are part of a collective memory influencing the education, concepts and vision of both architects. As soon as the exact dates of these lectures are known, they will be communicated here.
