Reddot award for innovative eco-display

16/3/2011

Reddot award for innovative eco-display

Niko’s eco-display has recently been declared a reddot award winner – the internationally coveted ‘Oscar awards’ from the world of product design. This Niko Home Control display is part of Niko’s latest generation of electrical installation. It allows families to read their home’s energy consumption from the display and helps them reduce their consumption considerably. Following a previous reddot award for Niko’s Mysterious switches in 2009, this second award confirms that Niko has become a real trendsetter in the field of design.

Niko was chosen as a winner from 4,433 entries. Because of its unique combination of pure design and innovative functionalities, the company has been able to become one of the select few to be awarded a reddot award for 2011. The eco-display is an integral part of Niko Home Control, the latest smart electrical installation that helps families actively reduce their energy consumption.

Trendsetter in design

The jury, which consists of leading design experts, was easily persuaded by the trendsetting design of the eco-display: a pure design with smooth buttons and wellbalanced proportions for discreet, flush-mounting installation. The display includes a clear user interface and logical symbols, allowing end-users to easily select the eco-mode option to put an end to stand-by energy consumption within their home.

The jury members of the reddot awards also consider the potential success of marketing the design – an aspect that would prove to be achieved easily because of the functionality offered by the eco-display. Luc Meirlaen, R&D manager at Niko, says: “The eco-display allows end-users to select the eco-mode function upon leaving their home with the single press of a button. Lights and socket outlets are switched off while heating and ventilation systems are turned down to a lower setting. One brief glance at the display will tell you everything you need to know about your energy consumption. The presence simulation option is another easy-to-use function. The user-friendliness of the eco-display is exceptional and the unit combines efficient energy use with comfort and safety.”

Second-time winner

At Batibouw, the eco-display was one of the ECO Award 2011 laureates for being the most environmentally friendly product. Together with previous reddot award laureate titles received by Niko, this once again confirms the success of the new approach taken by Niko several years ago when the company started focusing on innovative design and environmentally friendly solutions. “Our design staff are inspired by what they see in the world around them: from the latest developments in the automotive sector or green energy solutions to the latest trends in arts and culture. For a number of years, we have been able to develop timeless, simple and high-tech designs that are environmentally friendly at the same time. The eco-display perfectly fits in with this philosophy.”

Reddot award

The reddot awards is the largest and most renowned design competition in the world. Each year, an international jury of independent design experts selects the best design products.

The official award ceremony takes place at the Aalto Theatre, the opera of Essen on 4 July 2011. The winning products will be on display from 5 July until 1 August 2011 at the “Design on stage – winners reddot award: product design 2011” event, at the reddot design museum in Essen. If you want to see the latest in international product design, you can drive to the 4,000 m2 museum site with more than 1,500 prize-winning design products from Brussels in about 2.5 hours.
